Problems connecting my xp laptop to new samsumg 42 inch lcd tv?

i connect vga cable when tv and laptop is switched off. then i switch on. i get the windows begin up picture on the tv, but after 30 seconds it disappears and i either get a blank screen or jagged edges on the tv.
this happens on all screen-resolutions. i am at a loss now! do i need to load drivers for the Samsung LCD tv ?
Answer:
You need to press either FN F5 or FN F8 to get the display on your TV, and to change the display combination, after everything is hooked up, of course. If those keys don't work, try FN F1, FN F2, etc.
