it works fine and i can hit menu and look through the photos ive taken. when i turn it on and am ready to shoot, the screen is black. anyone have any idea of how to mend this?

Answer:
There's probably a button on the back of your camera that says something like “disp.” for display. Pressing that button allows you to turn the screen on and off (to conserve battery).
